Types of Natural & Veneer Stone Finishes

Natural stone comes in a number of finishes, but the most common are brushed, honed, and leathered. The categories listed below are clearly the most common, and this list is far from complete! Sawn, riven, polished, thermal, tumbled, sandblasted, vintage, acid wash, meshed, Rigato, Letano, and other natural stone finishes are only a few examples.

Polished Finish

Many people prefer highly polished stone, particularly marble. Polishing the stone brings out the best colors. Polished stone is not only bright, but also shiny and gleaming, with individuality that can be seen through the polish. A polished stone finish is ideal for those who like to show off their natural stone and highlight all of its features.

Honed Finish

Honing produces a more consistent, earthy look and is available in matte and satin finishes. It flattens more of the color and pattern variance and reduces the sparkle. Movement and dense veining can still be noticeable, but to a lesser extent.

Finish: Leathered

The most natural finish is a leathered finish. It has a river-washed look that emphasizes the natural stone’s original texture and is usually less translucent and more tactile. A leathered finish is most often used on natural stone flooring, but it can be used on any natural stone element in your house.
